St Petersburg is known as one of most beatiful cities in the world and is often called "Nothern capitol" of Russia.

St Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Russian tsar Peter the Great at mouth of Neva river. On May 16 1703 the first city erection was started - St. Peter and Paul fortress established to defend nothern Russian frontier from Swedes. In 1704 a new fortress of Kronstadt was founded on island Kotlin in Finnish Bay near The Neva mouth.

Peter I attached great importance to the new city as a waterway from Russia to Western Europe. In city center, on Vasilievsky Island, the first commercial port was established. Within 1712 - 1918 St. Petersburg was the capitol of Russia with tsar's residence in the city. In 1719 the first public museum (Kunstkamera) was opened, in 1724 Petersburg Academy of Sciences was founded here.

Due to its nothern location, St. Petersburg has very short night time in summer, called "white nights" which last from end of May till middle of July. The city sinks in twilights and has mistical appearance at white nights. Many music festivals and other cultural events, including worldwide ones, are carried out here during white nights time.

St Petersburg, situated on Baltic coast, has damp temperate sea climate with warm summer and mild winter. Average temperature in July is +18C and in January is -6C. As a rule temperature in city center is 2-5C higher than that one in suburbs.

Tourism is one of important parts of Petersburg's economy. About 4,500,000 tourists visited the city in 2005, including 2,180,000 foreign tourists. The city has many hotels, hostels and apartment rentals. Well-known hotels with luxury apartments are here: Pribaltiyskaya, Astoria, Sheraton, Europe, Nevsky Palace. Rates are very various in city hotels and range from $100 to $500 per night. However there are many private apartments held by owners or small businesses.
